Why do Hindus Worship idols ?

I am Born in a Hindu family and my Parents are mere Idol Worshipers and just Brought me up like them to worship hundred and thousands of Idols, but i think we are tricked by some blind belief persons who have tricked our parents and forefathers, the aim of the question is to Probe whether idol worship is Practical or not, whether we gain or achieve by kneeling in front of the mud and metal Idols ??
