a figure head. hard to explain, you have to see for yourself. site is tresco.co.uk (Tresco is a small island, part of the Isles of Scilly, UK), they're in the Valhalla Museum, lots of info and lovely pics on the site. these (human and animal) heads were put on the front of the ship. it was an old tradition.
